Shape memory alloys are desirable for torsional actuators because they are compact, efficient, electrically-driven and easily integrated into current aircraft. They can be formed into wires, rods, or tubes that can directly actuate in torsion unlike other more popular systems that actuate through extension-twist coupling. Additionally, their actuation properties can be tailored to a specific application through heat treatment. Mastery of SMA torsional actuators will lower the mechanical complexity of the system thus reducing the weight of the overall aircraft. |
